14 Essentials for a Good Racking System Installation

  • Slab – A quality floor is absolutely essential for pallet racking, cantilever racking and all industrial shelving installations.
  • SizingWarehouse storage operation requirement first, racking second and the building third.
  • Material Handling Equipment - Selecting the correct material handling equipment will maximise the racking density.
  • Facilities - Carefully consider the type of storage racking and storage shelving required to fit the handling operations especially if manual picking is required.
  • Access - If manual picking is required, set the storage shelving and racking aisle widths to ensure pickers can pass freely around each other or consider the stock layout to provide the minimum essential space.
  • Distances and Travel - Avoid very long pallet racking and storage shelving aisles without breaks. Your material handling equipment should be able to travel up one rack aisle and down another with minimal manoeuvring (and room to pass for pickers).
  • Internal LogisticsThe proximity of the collection, packing, distribution points, transport delivery and collection systems and sorting operations should be planned well ahead of the main racking design as their location is difficult to retrospectively and economically provide for and is therefore a major consideration of the building shape, the racking or industrial shelving layout and subsequent cost.
  • SpeedFast pick operations seldom exceed an 8m pallet racking frame height simply because of the time it takes the fork truck to access the goods on the rack. Beyond this overhead or man up automation becomes a consideration.
  • SpaceConsider storage systems for picked stock to enable transport turn round times to be minimal. This will help with shifts and minimising material handling equipment requirements as well as waiting time. Never design your warehouse storage systems on the advice of a single specialist supplier. The co-ordination of equipment can be a major stumbling block, cause of delays and considerable expense. It is a real project killer.
  • Resources and Buying Powerwe have several pallet racking and industrial shelving rolling mills which make our storage systems. They are placed strategically throughout Europe and Asia.
  • Used Products Unless you know the full traceable history of used racking and industrial shelving equipment, avoid it. Price is unlikely to be an issue unless you already own the storage systems and require help in planning its redeployment. It will not be the first time that we have actually acquired new pallet racking at less than quoted prices for used racking, making the difference negligible but this does not apply to condition and specification which is completely unregulated with used storage systems and can vary unpredictably.
  • Design and Build - we offer all the design and build facilities you need to construct exactly the correct pallet racking, cantilever racking or industrial shelving system compliant and functional in every respect.
  • Knowing the Best Combinations - we can help you with your choice of fork lift truck or specialist warehouse mechanical handling equipment, inter-floor and inter-departmental conveyor systems, picking, packing, labelling and onward distribution, containerisation trolleys, Kanban boxes and other JIT material handling support and industrial equipment. In smaller context industrial shelving and racking systems are often the first steps in 5S and Kaizen.
  • Specialised Installations - There are other automatic retrieval systems and specialist storage facilities in the form of carousels and overhead stacking systems which also fall within our remit. Another specialist area includes rack buildings where we clad the entire warehouse structure to produce a single clad building for large scale storage. See also dock and distribution systems
